Danesgate Community Pupil Referral Unit
Project Brief
Small doesn’t always mean simple: that was the case with this highly bespoke pupil referral unit for York’s Danesgate Community which was needed to allow a single pupil with additional needs to remain in the York education system.

The need for the new pupil referral unit was identified just weeks before the start of the new academic year. York City Council discovered our services through the Crown Commercial Services framework, which smoothed the way for the procurement process. What’s more, our modular construction methods meant we could build and deliver the unit in time for the new school term.
Danesgate Community specialises in providing children and young people who have social, emotional and mental health needs with a high quality education when they have struggled to succeed in another school. These additional needs meant that the design process was very sensitive, with consideration given to the child’s emotional wellbeing when choosing everything from window placement to room layout.
Externally, much consideration was given to ensuring the building didn’t negatively impact on the surrounding woodland, which meant not just selecting timber cladding to help the 300 sq ft structure blend with its environment, but also working with the local Tree Protection Officer to ensure roots weren’t damaged during the installation phase.
Our Approach
This bespoke Pupil Referral Unit perfectly matches the needs of the child it was designed for, allowing York City Council and Danesgate to ensure they remain within the city’s education system. Our ability to deliver a specific building on time and under budget not only saved money but improved the quality of a young person’s education too.

The Results
The new modular reception classroom comfortably passed the requirements for low emissions, and achieved a B Energy Performance Asset Rating in recognition of its energy efficiency. The cedar finish, which was treated around the door and then left to weather naturally across the rest of the building, creates an aesthetically striking effect.
