Building a greener, more sustainable future, today

In June 2019, the UK took a bold step towards a sustainable future by becoming the first major economy to pass a net-zero emissions law. This ambitious target mandates the UK to eliminate all greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. At Elite Systems, we’re dedicated to playing our part in achieving this critical goal. Our solution? Eco-modular buildings, a sustainable alternative to conventional construction that minimises environmental impact without compromising quality or functionality.

Leading by example

As a sustainable company ourselves, we’ve implemented several eco-friendly initiatives:

  • Solar power: We harness the power of the sun with our solar panels, reducing our reliance on fossil fuels.
  • Electric vehicles: Our fleet of mainly electric and hybrid cars minimises our carbon footprint and promotes cleaner transportation.
  • Sustainable modular building: When we expanded our own footprint, we chose to integrate a sustainable modular building, demonstrating our commitment to sustainable practices.

The construction industry, while representing 7% of the UK economy, contributes a disproportionate 10% of the nation’s greenhouse gas emissions and influences a further 47%. At Elite Systems, we’re determined to change this narrative by championing eco-conscious building practices.

Understanding net zero

Net zero is all about balance. It’s like balancing a scale, where the amount of harmful greenhouse gases we release into the atmosphere is equal to the amount we take out. When these two sides are perfectly balanced, we’ve reached net zero. The UK government’s Net Zero Strategy is a roadmap for the nation to achieve this balance across all sectors by 2050.

The environmental impact of traditional construction

The construction industry in the UK bears a significant environmental burden. Directly, it contributes approximately 10% of the country’s greenhouse gas emissions, while indirectly influencing a staggering 47%. These emissions stem from various sources, including the extraction of unsustainable materials for building and the reliance on fossil fuels to power construction machinery.

What is a net-zero modular building?

A net-zero modular building is designed and constructed to produce as much energy as it consumes over its lifespan, achieved through renewable energy sources, energy-efficient materials, and on-site energy generation.

What are the advantages of choosing a net-zero modular building?

  • Environmental stewardship: Net-zero modular buildings have a considerably smaller environmental impact than traditional buildings.
  • Cost savings: Energy-efficient design leads to lower energy bills.
  • Enhanced well-being: These buildings often prioritise occupant comfort and well-being through thoughtful design.
  • Positive brand image: Choosing a net-zero building reflects a commitment to sustainability, enhancing your company’s reputation.

Modular buildings: A sustainable solution

Modular construction offers a greener approach to building. Here’s how:

  • Eco-friendly materials: We prioritise the use of sustainable, responsibly sourced materials, such as FSC-certified timber, in our modular constructions.
  • Energy efficiency: The controlled factory environment of modular construction minimises energy consumption compared to traditional on-site building methods.
  • Reusability: Modular buildings are designed for disassembly and relocation. This flexibility ensures that structures can be repurposed, reducing waste and maximising resource utilisation.
  • Reduced transportation: By eliminating the need to transport heavy machinery and materials to and from construction sites, modular building significantly reduces transportation-related emissions.

Here’s how we’re making a difference:

  • FSC-certified timber: All our modular buildings are constructed using FSC-certified timber, ensuring responsible forest management and minimising our impact on delicate ecosystems.
  • Recycled materials: Whenever feasible, we incorporate recycled materials into our building process, diverting waste from landfills and promoting a circular economy.
  • Energy-efficient designs: Our modular buildings are designed with energy efficiency in mind, incorporating features that minimise energy consumption and reduce operational costs for our clients.
  • Sustainable supply chains: We collaborate closely with our suppliers to encourage and implement sustainable practices throughout our supply chain.
  • Biophilic Design: We integrate biophilic design elements into our buildings to enhance occupant well-being and productivity. By incorporating natural light, fresh air, and green spaces, we create spaces that inspire creativity, reduce stress, and improve overall quality of life.

Case Study

At Dedham Primary School in Essex, we created a sustainable building, which included solar PV panels on the roof of the building to enable the school to generate its own electricity for the classroom, alongside installing a rainwater soakaway and a foul drain pumping system to ensure all rainwater is removed both efficiently and economically.

A sound investment, not an additional cost

Contrary to common misconceptions, embracing net-zero construction doesn’t have to break the bank. The current trend of rising energy costs coupled with falling equipment costs has effectively eliminated the significant price barrier that once deterred many from choosing the sustainable path. In many cases, the initial investment in a net-zero scheme is more than offset by the long-term savings in energy costs over the building’s lifespan. Choosing net zero is not only environmentally responsible but also economically savvy.
