Modular Childcare Unit Extension at Cwrt Rawlin Primary School
The Project
Elite Systems was commissioned to design and manufacture a modular childcare unit for Cwrt Rawlin Primary School, located in Cae Meillion, Caerphilly, South Wales.
This project was part of the school’s ongoing efforts to enhance its facilities and expand its teaching space. The modular extension not only provided much-needed room for childcare services but also seamlessly integrated with the school’s existing sports hall, improving the learning environment for both students and staff.
Thanks to our bespoke approach, we were able to design the modular building with four precisely sized units—two measuring 12m x 2.5m and two at 10.3m x 3.6m.

Features & Benefits
General superstructure
A single storey steel frame building with 25-year structural warranty.

Provides a durable, water-resistant surface that is easy to clean. This feature replicates the style and functionality of a traditional build, offering both practicality and aesthetic appeal.
Permanent Fencing Around the Building
Ensures long-term security and safety for both the school and the building.
The challenge...
...and how we approached it
- Adapting to the school’s sloped landscape.
- Installing secure piers at the front of the building while maintaining level access at the rear.
- Rerouting existing drainage systems to accommodate the new structure.
- Prioritising safety at every stage to ensure minimal disruption to students and staff.
- Installing secure Heras fencing to maintain a safe worksite.
- Modular units delivered and installed over a weekend to reduce interference with school activities.
- Implementing stringent measures to minimise disruption during school hours.
- Installing pad foundations at varying levels to provide a stable and secure base for the modular unit.
- Constructing blockwork piers for additional structural support.
- Carefully rerouting existing drainage systems around the building’s footprint.
- Making significant depth adjustments to align with live public sewer connections.
- Establishing exclusion zones and secure fencing to ensure safety.
- Careful planning and scheduling to avoid peak school hours for potential disruptions.
- Strong communication with the school to ensure all parties were informed and operations ran smoothly.
- Ensuring smooth operation during weekend work to avoid disruption to the school environment.
“Delivering this childcare unit for Cwrt Rawlin Primary School was a rewarding challenge. Despite the site’s sloping terrain, we were able to design a solution that seamlessly integrated with the school’s existing infrastructure, all while ensuring minimal disruption. It’s great to see the positive impact this space has already had on the school, and we’re proud to have contributed to their growth.”
— Marcus Sutcliffe, Director at Elite Systems GB
