Royal Surrey County Hospital
Project Brief
Elite was commissioned by Royal Surrey County Hospital to design and build a 20-bed modular isolation ward as part of their urgent COVID-19 response. From the initial call to project completion, we delivered a fully operational, high-quality healthcare facility in just 14 weeks—enabling NHS staff to provide essential patient care in a safe, purpose-built environment.

Our Approach
Rapid Modular Ward Construction for Surrey Hospital
Speed and precision were essential for this fast-track modular healthcare construction project. Within 24 hours of the initial inquiry, we were on-site in Surrey, collaborating with the hospital’s estates team to assess the project scope and define key parameters.
Working closely with NHS stakeholders, we refined the modular hospital ward design to meet the specific clinical needs of the healthcare team. Our flexible, design-and-build approach allowed us to streamline both off-site manufacturing and on-site installation—maximising efficiency and minimising disruption to the existing hospital infrastructure.
Once the final design was approved, we commenced groundworks on-site while simultaneously beginning off-site construction of 24 prefabricated modular units in our controlled manufacturing facility. These modules were then delivered to the hospital and craned into position with speed and precision.
On-site fit-out works included full mechanical and electrical installation, plumbing, and the application of hygienic, anti-bacterial cladding in each patient isolation room, clinical washroom, and critical care space.
The Results
Rapid Healthcare Delivery: A Modular Ward Built in Just 14 Weeks
The result was a fully operational, high-specification modular hospital ward—delivered in just 14 weeks from the initial call and fully compliant with NHS infection prevention and control standards. This rapid turnaround was a fraction of the typical two-year timeframe required for traditional construction. The project’s exceptional speed and efficiency were publicly praised in Parliament by the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, highlighting it as a benchmark in fast-track healthcare delivery.
