Wood you take a look?
The New Commercial Timber Guidebook project is underway

The Built by Nature Fund has awarded a grant of €200K (~£170K GBP) to create a Commercial Timber Guidebook

Why does the UK need a Timber Guidebook?

This guide is needed because there is currently no consensus on how to build timber structures and all that entails.

The point will be to show that, by working together with with major industry stakeholders and experts, constructors can determine ways to minimise or eliminate risks associated with large and complex timber projects. It will also show the insurance industry that the construction sector is seeking standardisation and thinking holistically.

In short? The Guidebook will aim to ensure that all within the construction industry and beyond are on the same page.

So what will the Guidebook do?

  • Establish common principles for design
  • Categorise different techniques for mass timber construction
  • Outline technical design measures

It will also address the challenges and costs associated with insuring timber structures, which is currently the biggest obstacle to mass timber construction in the UK.

Getting Insurers On Board

The Guidebook will be used to support other projects that aim to raise awareness and understanding within the insurance industry, whilst seeking to reinforce knowledge-sharing through direct communication and by showcasing successful constructions.

What does this mean to us?

Elite Systems’ managing director Marcus Sutcliffe shares the hopes of others that this project will bring together the right people to address concerns related to timber construction. We are eager to see how the project evolves and positively influences the modular building sector in the future.
