When police officers attend an incident where they suspect an individual is suffering from a mental health problem and may inflict harm on themselves or others, they need to be taken to what is known as a ‘place of safety’. By taking the patient to a dedicated Section 136 suite, the individual in distress can be assessed by qualified mental health staff and receive treatment in a safe and appropriate setting.
Unfortunately, for some mental health trusts, there is a shortage of dedicated space meaning that they are not always able to provide these specialist Section 136 suites. Where this is the case, patients can be left waiting to access facilities, be taken to other ‘places of safety’ such as already overstretched A&E departments or, as an absolute last resort, to a police station.
By introducing new Section 136 suites, or expanding the capacity of existing facilities, healthcare trusts can reduce incidents where individuals are kept in inappropriate settings or the access to the support they need is delayed. The case for increasing the number and improving the quality of places of safety is strong, but many trusts face financial challenges that mean the methods to introduce, improve or expand such facilities have to be carefully considered – but we believe modular solutions should form part of the response.
