Project Brief

Heckmondwike Grammar School required a two-storey classroom block to expand teaching capacity without interrupting daily school life. The building had to be craned into position over existing school structures, which required a temporary road closure and careful scheduling of works outside school hours.
Originally intended as a short-term hire solution, the block proved so robust and effective that the school retained it for over 20 years.

The design provided flexible, well-equipped teaching spaces with modern finishes, natural light, andICT integration. Safety, sustainability, and architectural
harmony with the existing site were all central to the project’s success.

The Main Features

Outside

Externally, the two-storey modular classroom block was delivered in 14 precision-manufactured modules and installed using a carefully planned crane-lift operation over existing school buildings. A strong steel structural framework provides long-term strength and stability, while plastisol-coated steel cladding offers excellent weather resistance and low ongoing maintenance.

Large double-glazed aluminium windows maximise natural daylight and improve energy efficiency, contributing to a bright internal environment. The overall design was in keeping with the existing school campus and surrounding environment, integrating seamlessly with the site while delivering a robust, long-term solution that remained fully operational for over 20 years.

Inside

The internal spaces were designed to create bright, comfortable, and adaptable learning environments that support modern teaching methods. Classrooms are well-proportioned and flexible, allowing layouts to be reconfigured to suit different class sizes and teaching styles. Integrated ICT infrastructure, including interactive whiteboards and projector systems, ensures the spaces are fully equipped for technology-led learning.

Durable, low-maintenance interior finishes were selected to withstand continuous daily use, while robust flooring and fire-rated internal doors ensure long-term safety and compliance. Energy-efficient lighting with prismatic diffusers, combined with natural and mechanical ventilation systems, provides a comfortable, healthy environment for both students and staff.

The Results

The Heckmondwike Grammar School classroom block provided an immediate, high-quality expansion of teaching space with minimal disruption.Although originally intended as a temporary hire, the building’s strength, adaptability, and modern specification enabled it to remain in use for over two decades.

Internally, the classrooms delivered bright, flexible, and technology-rich learning environments. Externally, the building integrated seamlessly into the school campus. This project highlights the long-term value of well-designed modular buildings and demonstrates how temporary solutions can become enduring assets.
